Searching for parking space is often a frustrating activity for many in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD). The situation is made worse by motorists having to take up on-street parking which is often not readily available and doesn’t guarantee the vehicles’ security.

To remedy this, the CBD will require to evolve into a smart city by embracing technologies to improve already existing infrastructure and resources. A good example that can be emulated is the construction of an underground parking silo at the Holy Family Basilica. In a city facing parking challenges the silo will be a much needed reprieve for motorists in the CBD.

The four- floor parking silo was dedicated and unveiled on 2nd December, 2019 at a colourful service held at the Holy Family Basilica Church. The service was presided over by his eminence Cardinal John Njue. The Paytech team, which also attended the unveiling, was awarded the opportunity to fit the ultra-modern parking silo with a state-of-the-art Smart Parking Solution. The solution combines an Access Control System, Parking Guidance System and Electric Vehicle Charging system.

THE IMPLEMENTED SOLUTION PROVIDES:

Access Control: The automated entry and exit system grants access to authorized vehicles into the car park as well as identifying / denying entry of blacklisted vehicles.

Drivers will also be able to access the parking facility by using temporary barcode tickets or pre-paid cards. The pre-paid cards will enable drivers to have a tap and go experience without having to pass by the Pay Stations.

Intelligent Parking Guidance System (PGS) which combines traffic monitoring, communication, processing and information dissemination technologies to give drivers dynamic, real-time information about parking availability. The system utilizes outdoor and in-door occupancy signs as well as bay indicators to guide drivers to free spots in a quick and easy way.

Electric Vehicle Charging System: The future of electric mobility in Kenya is a subject that we at Paytech are very passionate about. The installed Electric vehicle charging infrastructure at Holy Family Basilica Parking Silo is user friendly as it provides;

• Clear charging instructions and plug status are shown using a backlight display;
• Flexible authentication meaning users can either authenticate before or after connecting the cable to Electric Vehicle.
• Accessibility for disabled regarding the height of connector and display guide;
• Easy payment mode.
